  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Manchester City have been fined around £800,000 after admitting to nine breaches of Premier League Rule L.33, which relates to punctuality at kick-offs and second-half restarts. Each violation increased in penalty, with fines ranging from £40k to £190k. One notable breach occurred in December’s Manchester derby, where City were late to start both halves.

WHAT THE PREMIER LEAGUE STATEMENT READ

On Thursday, the Premier League announced: "The Premier League and Manchester City FC have entered into a sanction agreement after the club accepted it had breached Premier League Rule L.33 in relation to kick-off and re-start obligations.

"The breaches occurred in nine Premier League matches during the 2024/25 season.

"Rules relating to kick-offs and re-starts help ensure the organisation of the competition is set at the highest possible professional standard and provides certainty to fans and participating clubs.

"It also ensures the broadcast of every Premier League match is kept to schedule."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

While the L.33 fine is relatively minor, Manchester City still face 115 charges related to alleged breaches of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations — a case that could carry far more serious consequences. The Citizens have denied any wrongdoing and are awaiting the trial’s outcome, which will dominate headlines when proceedings begin, as punishment could see the eight-time Premier League champions relegated to the Championship.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAN CITY?

For now, all that Pep Guardiola and his side can do is to continue working on the side through the Club World Cup and the pre-season, as they look to return to form following a torrid time last season, which saw them end up trophyless.
